England fast-bowler legend James Anderson was knighted for his exceptional contribution towards cricket, the sole sportsperson named on former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s resignation honors list.
It was in July 2024 that Anderson said goodbye to international cricket, aged 42, after two decades of a record-breaking career. With 704 Test scalps, he was England’s leading Test wicket-taker and third in the world, only formerly surpassed by spin greats like Muttiah Muralitharan and deceased spin legend Shane Warne. Anderson’s record includes four Ashes wins and 188 Tests – a total only beaten by India’s Sachin Tendulkar.
Anderson’s passion for the game remains unbeatable, even after his retirement from the global platform. He will still be retained in domestic cricket with Lancashire for season 2025. His dedication, passion and consistency for the sport remain an inspiration for many.
“His skill, application, and sportsmanship have touched countless millions of fans and players around the globe and in England,” said England and Wales Cricket Board Chairman Richard Thompson, recognizing the bowler’s long lasting legacy.
This knighthood is a fitting accolade for Anderson’s peerless playing career and life-long commitment to cricket. As he embarks on new beginnings, his position as one of England’s greats is etched in history for eternity.
