The Demis Hassabis exit from Google DeepMind top job has landed at the worst possible time for a company trying to convince the world it still leads the AI race. Within days, the lab lost its founding chief executive from day-to-day charge, its chief scientist walked out the door after 27 years, and four senior researchers quietly resigned to start a rival venture. For a unit that once looked untouchable, the timing says a lot.
Demis Hassabis, who built DeepMind from a London startup into Google’s flagship AI lab, is stepping back from the CEO chair. He is not leaving. Sundar Pichai has named him Chair of Google DeepMind and, separately, Chief Scientist of Alphabet, a role that frees him to focus on artificial general intelligence, scientific research, and his other venture, Isomorphic Labs, the drug discovery company he still leads.
Taking over the day-to-day running of Gemini and frontier model development is Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind’s soft-spoken, Turkish-born chief technology officer. He has spent 13 years at the lab, helped build its early deep learning team, and contributed to breakthroughs like WaveNet and DQN. Kavukcuoglu now carries the title of Senior Vice President and reports directly to Pichai, putting him in charge of the Gemini app, its developer ecosystem, and the frontier research agenda that Google desperately needs to sharpen.
The reshuffle did not stop with Hassabis. Jeff Dean, Google’s chief scientist and employee number 30, announced he is leaving after nearly three decades to build a new startup called Discovery Loop, reportedly in talks to raise funding at a 10 billion-dollar valuation. Dean’s departure, alongside three other senior researchers who left to join him, has fed a growing narrative that Google’s AI talent is drifting elsewhere just as the stakes rise.
Reuters reported that co-founder Sergey Brin had been privately pushing staff to move faster on Gemini, and that the reorganisation reflects an attempt to pursue model supremacy rather than a retreat from the competition. Alphabet’s stock slipped roughly four percent in the days following the announcement, a signal that investors are watching this transition closely.
Google released Gemini 3 in November 2025, and the app has since crossed 950 million monthly users, a number Pichai highlighted when explaining the changes. But the company has faced persistent criticism over model delays, internal morale, and its ability to keep pace with OpenAI and Anthropic at the frontier. Analysts told CNBC that Kavukcuoglu’s promotion signals a deliberate shift away from open-ended research toward faster, product-focused execution.
There is also a geography angle worth watching. DeepMind’s roots are firmly in London, while Kavukcuoglu operates closer to Google’s Mountain View core. Commentators have flagged this as a possible weakening of Britain’s standing in the global AI race, even as Hassabis insists his commitment to AGI, and to the lab he built, remains unchanged.
For business leaders and investors tracking the AI sector, the Google DeepMind leadership reshuffle is less about one executive’s title and more about strategic intent. Google is signalling that speed and commercial delivery now matter as much as pure research prestige. Whether Kavukcuoglu can close the gap with OpenAI and Anthropic while retaining DeepMind’s scientific credibility will likely define Google’s AI trajectory through the rest of 2026.
Hassabis, for his part, has framed the change as a natural evolution. In a note to staff, he said he has been working toward AGI his whole life and now feels it is close at hand, adding that he needs the space to focus on the bigger picture. Whether that reassures a workforce watching senior colleagues walk out the door is another matter entirely, and one Google will need to answer soon.
