In a significant development for India’s space program, the Indian government has appointed V. Narayanan as the new Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Narayanan, who will also serve as the Secretary of the Department of Space, is set to take over the position on January 14, succeeding the current Chairman, S. Somanath.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Narayanan’s appointment for a tenure of two years, or until further instructions, according to an official communication from the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions.
Narayanan brings with him nearly four decades of expertise in rocket and spacecraft propulsion systems, having contributed extensively to ISRO’s growth. He currently serves as the Director of ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in Valiamala, Kerala, a crucial facility for developing propulsion technologies for space missions.
Narayanan joined ISRO in 1984 and has been instrumental in the development of propulsion systems for spacecraft and launch vehicles. His early work on solid propulsion systems for rockets like the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) and the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) has been foundational to ISRO’s achievements. He has also been instrumental in advancements related to ablative nozzle systems and composite motor cases.
Under Narayanan’s leadership, LPSC has furthered its innovations in liquid propulsion, supporting some of India’s most ambitious space endeavors. His appointment as ISRO’s Chairman is expected to enhance the organization’s capabilities and help shape the next phase of India’s space exploration journey.
