WinZO, India’s largest interactive social gaming platform, has taken a major step toward cancer prevention by launching the ‘Play to Prevent Cancer’ initiative. This collaboration with Tata Memorial Hospital aims to boost early cancer detection through gene counseling and educate millions of users on the importance of genetic risk factors for cancer.
Through this initiative, WinZO mobilized its user base to raise funds, with an additional contribution from its 200 employees, to amplify the total donation. The money went to Tata Memorial Hospital’s Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research, and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), where the materials will help train a specialized gene counseling team.
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in India, and the rising incidence underscores the need for improved detection and timely interventions. WinZO’s partnership with Tata Memorial aims to tackle this challenge by focusing on genetic counseling to understand inherited cancer risks and promote early screening and diagnosis.
The initiative focuses on building skills in cancer genetic counseling, providing critical interventions related to gene reporting and family-based counseling. Dr. Rajiv Sarin, Head of the Cancer Genetics Clinic at Tata Memorial Hospital, emphasized the necessity of well-trained professionals to provide personalized, culturally sensitive genetic counseling to cancer patients. He noted, “To maximize the impact of donations, we require a well-equipped, skilled workforce that can offer timely, evidence-based genetic counseling.”
In addition to its medical objectives, WinZO’s platform is making a significant impact on the mental health of cancer patients. Gaming, which is often used as a therapeutic tool, has been shown to alleviate anxiety, depression, and isolation, common among individuals battling cancer. Cancer survivors and patients have shared how playing games on WinZO’s platform helps distract them from their worries and boosts their mental resilience during challenging times.
Nachiket Mor, Scientist at The Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health, emphasized the importance of incorporating gaming into cancer care. “Patients often face significant mental health challenges, including anxiety and loneliness. Games offer a much-needed distraction, helping them cope with both immediate stress and long-term mental health concerns.”
WinZO’s platform provides an opportunity for cancer patients to explore games that promote cognitive flexibility, attention control, and emotional well-being, further aiding their mental recovery. These games are particularly beneficial for individuals facing both the emotional toll of cancer and its physical challenges.
Through this groundbreaking initiative, WinZO and Tata Memorial are not only expanding early cancer detection in India but are also transforming cancer care by integrating mental health support into the recovery process. With this partnership, they aim to provide comprehensive support to cancer patients, empowering them to face both physical and emotional challenges with strength and resilience.
