In its latest move towards biometric advancement, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a beta version of its new Aadhaar FaceRD App, which provides facial recognition as an optional mode for verification of identity.
So what does this mean for the users? In simple words, you can now authenticate using your face — no OTP, fingerprint, or iris scan required. Your facial features get captured and checked against your Aadhaar photo held in your profile.
This would be a relief for elderly individuals and those whose fingerprints have become worn out, who usually have to deal with biometric mismatches. FaceRD can make Aadhaar-based services such as pension disbursement, Jeevan Pramaan certification, and access to governmental schemes more accessible.
UIDAI has explained that the app does not retain any data of its users on devices and privacy has been of utmost concern. The app is for Android devices and is still in beta, so some of its features can still be refined based upon feedback from users.
This initiative perfectly aligns with India’s wider Digital India vision of applying technology to public service delivery at its center. With its use of FaceRD, UIDAI is hinting at facial biometrics becoming just as ubiquitous as UPIs or QR scans in everyday life.
