Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India and one of the key leaders behind the country’s economic transformation, has passed away at 92. He died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, where he was being treated for age-related health problems after a sudden loss of consciousness.

Singh, known for his calm demeanor and integrity, served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. Before becoming Prime Minister, he was a trailblazing Finance Minister who introduced groundbreaking economic reforms that helped open India’s markets to the world. Under his leadership, India saw significant economic growth and social welfare programs.

Born in 1932 in what is now Pakistan, Singh rose from humble beginnings to become a respected economist. He studied at Cambridge and Oxford universities and later worked as a government adviser. In 1991, at a time when India was facing a financial crisis, he was appointed Finance Minister and introduced major reforms like trade liberalization, which reshaped the Indian economy.

In 2004, Singh became Prime Minister after Sonia Gandhi, leader of the Congress party, chose him to lead the country. Despite political challenges, Singh’s government focused on economic development, poverty reduction, and strengthening India’s global relations, especially with the United States through the 2008 nuclear deal.

Though his tenure ended in 2014 after his party lost the general elections, Singh remained respected across party lines for his contributions to India’s growth. Even after retiring from active politics, he continued to be regarded as one of India’s most respected leaders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed admiration for Singh, praising his leadership and contributions to India’s economy.

Singh’s legacy will live on in the policies he championed, and he is remembered for his commitment to India’s progress. He is survived by his wife and three daughters. Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, honoring a leader who changed the course of India’s history.
