Indian startups are reshaping the e-commerce landscape by challenging the dominance of foreign players, with a particular focus on innovative, instant delivery models, according to Dilsher Singh Malhi, Founder and CEO of Zupee. Speaking at the India Internet Governance Forum (IIGF) 2024 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Malhi highlighted the growing influence of Indian enterprises in the global digital economy.

Malhi emphasized the shift from foreign-dominated e-commerce to India’s burgeoning startup ecosystem. He noted that while foreign companies once controlled much of the e-commerce space in India, the rise of instant delivery models pioneered by Indian startups is significantly disrupting traditional retail and online commerce.

“A major part of this transformation is driven by government support,” said Malhi, crediting India’s policy frameworks and initiatives that have nurtured innovation. He acknowledged the government’s role in creating a regulatory environment that encourages responsible growth and innovation. “The principles-based approach to regulation allows startups the flexibility to innovate while ensuring responsibility,” he added.

Malhi also discussed India’s rapid digital evolution, positioning the country as a global leader in digital technologies. He pointed out that India is now the third-largest startup ecosystem worldwide, buoyed by robust digital public infrastructure such as UPI, Aadhaar, and advancements in mobile connectivity.

Looking toward the future, Malhi expressed confidence in initiatives such as the Bharat 6G Vision, the Semiconductor Mission, and the AI Mission, all of which he believes will drive India’s economic growth and help the country achieve its ambitious goal of becoming a USD 5 trillion economy.

“Indian startups are already making significant contributions to industries like education, healthcare, travel, and entertainment. They are poised to meet society’s evolving needs by providing innovative solutions that improve social well-being,” said Malhi.

He also highlighted the profound impact of emerging technologies like AI, blockchain, and gaming on industries such as education, financial services, and cybersecurity. Malhi’s remarks at IIGF 2024 underscored India’s growing role as a hub for digital innovation and the critical role startups will continue to play in driving economic and technological progress.
