Hyundai EV charging points on the myHyundai app have now crossed the 30,000 mark, and if you’ve ever driven an electric car in India, you’ll know exactly why that number matters.
Anyone who has owned an EV in this country has a version of the same story, a nearly dead battery, four different charging apps open on the phone, and a sinking feeling that none of them actually work at the station you’ve pulled into. Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is betting it can put an end to that particular headache. On Monday, the company announced that EV users can now access more than 30,000 charging points across the country through its myHyundai app, describing it as one of India’s largest integrated charging networks on a single platform.
What makes this different from just another corporate press release is the scale of the plumbing behind it. Hyundai didn’t build all 30,000 points itself, it partnered with leading charge point operators and service providers to bring the network into one interface, and crucially, the platform is open to electric vehicles of every brand, not just Hyundai owners. That’s a fairly generous move for a carmaker, and it signals something bigger, Hyundai is positioning itself as an infrastructure player in India’s EV story, not just a vehicle seller chasing showroom footfall.
What the app actually does
Strip away the marketing language and the functionality is straightforward. Open the app, and it locates the nearest charger, plots a route to it, lets you reserve a slot ahead of time, and processes the payment digitally, all through one unified interface instead of juggling separate apps for separate networks. For a country where range anxiety remains the single biggest deterrent to EV adoption, that convenience isn’t a small thing.
Hyundai claims the network is dense enough that charging facilities are now within an average radius of 25 km almost anywhere in India, and the coverage stretches across major highway corridors, Delhi-Gurugram-Jaipur, Mumbai-Pune-Bengaluru, Mumbai-Ratnagiri-Goa, Chennai-Vellore-Bengaluru and Hyderabad-Kurnool-Bengaluru among them. If you’ve road-tripped in an EV before, you’ll recognise these as exactly the stretches where charging infrastructure has historically been patchiest.
The 600-station ambition
Beyond aggregating third-party networks, Hyundai is also expanding its own footprint. The company currently runs 183 DC fast-charging stations spread across 105 cities, and it wants to more than triple that, scaling up to 600 stations by 2030. These aren’t trickle chargers either; Hyundai’s DC fast chargers currently offer capacities ranging from 60 kW to 240 kW, fast enough to top up meaningfully during a highway coffee break rather than an overnight stay. New units are planned for key cities, highways and Hyundai dealerships, and several are deliberately placed near restaurants and food outlets so drivers have somewhere to wait while their car tops up.
Tarun Garg, Managing Director and CEO of Hyundai Motor India, framed the announcement around adoption rather than app features, saying charging infrastructure remains a decisive factor in whether Indian buyers actually make the switch to electric.
The numbers behind the numbers
What lends the announcement some credibility beyond the press-release gloss is the usage data Hyundai chose to disclose. The company says its charging network has already supported more than three lakh charging sessions and delivered over 50 lakh kWh of energy, that’s roughly 5 million kWh, enough to power a meaningful number of Indian households for a year. HMIL also claims the network’s use has helped avoid around 3.5 million kg of carbon dioxide emissions, a figure worth treating as a company estimate rather than an independently audited one, but directionally consistent with the scale of usage cited.
Why this matters beyond Hyundai showrooms
It’s worth stepping back here. India’s EV charging landscape has long been fragmented, a mess of state-subsidised networks, private operators and automaker-specific stations that rarely talk to each other. Hyundai folding 30,000 points into a single app doesn’t fix that fragmentation at the infrastructure level, but it does paper over it at the user level, which for a driver looking for a charger at 11 pm on the highway is arguably what actually counts.
Whether the 600-station target survives contact with real-world execution timelines by 2030 remains to be seen, infrastructure promises in India have a habit of slipping. But for now, Hyundai has handed EV owners, regardless of what badge is on their bonnet, one less app to open and one less thing to worry about on a long drive.
